What is Duty Statement?

A resume bullet that lists a responsibility without any result, reading like the job description rather than a performance.

A duty statement is a resume bullet that describes responsibility without result: responsible for managing social media accounts, handled customer inquiries, assisted with monthly reporting. It tells the reader what your job description said, not what happened because you were the one doing it, which is why a resume full of duties reads interchangeable with every other holder of the same title. Duties are not banned. A line or two of scope-setting context is often genuinely useful, especially for roles where the reader will not otherwise know what the title covered, and junior resumes need some of it. The upgrade path is to interrogate each duty with four questions: how much, how well, compared to what, and what changed. Handled customer inquiries becomes a statement about volume, resolution, or retention if any of those are true and checkable. Convert the bullets attached to your most relevant recent roles first, because those are the ones that get read closely, and let the genuinely contextual duties stay short and unapologetic.
