Leaving to move into a different field or profession entirely.

Dear [Manager name], I am writing to resign from my position as [Role] at [Company]. My last working day will be [Last working day]. After a great deal of reflection, I have decided to change direction professionally and pursue a path outside our field. This decision is about following a long-considered interest, not about any shortcoming in this role or this team. If anything, the confidence I built here is what makes the change possible. During my notice period I will finish what can be finished, document the rest, and support whatever transition plan you think best. I want my last contribution here to be a handover the team barely feels. Thank you for the opportunities, the patience, and the standards you have held me to. They travel with me wherever I work next. Sincerely, [Your name]

Handing it in

  • You do not need to justify the new field, one sentence of direction is plenty.
  • Expect curiosity, and decide in advance how much of the story you want to share.
  • Ask for a reference while goodwill is at its peak, not months later.

Check your actual contract for the notice period before naming a last day; documents beat folklore. The conversation with your manager comes before the letter, always.
