Resignation letter template: retirement letter
Retiring at the end of a career, with time to plan a generous handover.
Dear [Manager name], After much reflection, I am writing to let you know that I will be retiring from my position as [Role] at [Company]. My last working day will be [Last working day]. It is hard to compress what this career has meant into a short letter. I am deeply grateful for the roles I have held, the people I have worked alongside, and the trust this organization has placed in me over the years. I leave with far more than I arrived with. Because this date has been long planned, I want to make the transition a model one. I will document my responsibilities thoroughly, spend real time with whoever succeeds me, and remain available for occasional questions after my departure if that would be useful. Thank you for making my final chapter here such a good one. I wish [Company] and the whole team continued success. Sincerely, [Your name]
Handing it in
- Give notice well beyond the minimum, succession takes longer than a handover.
- Coordinate with HR on pension, benefits, and equity timelines before fixing the final date.
- Decide in advance whether you are open to consulting after retirement, you will be asked.
Check your actual contract for the notice period before naming a last day; documents beat folklore. The conversation with your manager comes before the letter, always.
